The 2014 Pritzker Prize was awarded to Shigeru Ban for his innovative use of unconventional materials such as paper and his commitment to humanitarian causes through his work.
In March 2013, Shigeru Ban opened his only project in Spain: the IE Paper Pavilion, located in the gardens of IE Business School in Madrid and built with the collaboration of architecture students from IE University. The installation is a multi-purpose space for Executive Education activities and has hosted events including the ELLE Talks, organised by IE together with ELLE magazine.
The paper pavilion was designed by Shigeru Ban Architects. Its highly efficient structural design was erected in just twelve weeks —with sustainability objectives and the requirement that it be a temporary project— using 173 paper tubes joined by timber connections and supported on paper columns.
